Tolkien Country – Back-country Snowshoeing The Phelix Trail – Brian Waddington Hut

– March 25th and 26th –

We had dubbed this as the last backcountry trip of this winter in the knowledge that we wouldn’t be able to make it out as a group again for a while. It was made even more important for us having ballsed up the last backcountry trip (i.e. leaving it to the last minute). To prevent that happening again we had planned this 2 months in advance and so we were very much looking forward to it. Unfortunately the Dutch Waffle wasn’t able to make it at the last moment but it was going to deter Sam and I from being in the presence of Mount Gandalf, Mount Aragorn and Mount Shadowfax – the land of Tolkien.

Big Cedar and Kennedy Falls Trail

5th March – 2017

Hindsight is always a great thing. Big Cedar and Kennedy Falls are so close to home yet I hadn’t even heard of the trail let alone been on it. With the trail being as fun as it was, I couldn’t believe that we had waiting this long to check it out.

Hiking The West Coast Trail – 5/5

The usual morning routine. Breakfast and packing away camp. It was a beautiful morning as the fog still hadn’t lifted off the river. I was in better mood today but I think this was mainly because I know that today was the last full day. And tomorrow’s hike will be a short 10k. Perfect. I had also accepted that this was a heads down and destination based trip rather than focusing on enjoying the journey. This made it easier to enjoy.

Hiking The West Coast Trail – 3/5

Waking up pretty bleary eyed, we grab a taxi into town for some early morning breakfast. The rain hadn’t stopped all night. We managed to find one place that opened at 6 am which was a blessing as we didn’t have any food with us at the house. We scoffed our breakfast but we were cutting it a bit fine. The shuttle was scheduled to leave at 06:45. It was 06:43 by the time we left the breakfast place. Still chewing on our last mouthfuls we made a dash for it.
