Today was going to be a short day. I had been up to this as my ‘well deserved rest day’. After all my knees and thighs were burning. It didn’t quite turn out like that.
Day 4 started off as Day 3 ended – Wet.
Paul found me in the toilet block warming my hands under the dryer as it was a pretty cold night. This was mainly due to the fact that I had no ground mat, meaning all my heat was used to warm-up the water under my ground sheet, not my body.
I left Canada for to the USA. There are 2 main ways to negotiate Washington (from the book). One was the Inland route (East of the Olympic Mountains), and the other was being the Peninsula route (West of the Olympic Mountains). You can summarise this by either the Dry (inland) or Wet (peninsula) way. I chose ‘wet’ because I thought the rain forest would be pretty.
Day 2 – I knew I had a short 30k day ahead of me so this was the perfect remedy for Day 1. This was a very quaint ride along bike paths that meandered through rural and residential areas of Victoria Island. It was flat, there were plenty of people and it was just ‘nice’.
Somehow and somewhere I had decided to ride a bicycle from Vancouver to San Francisco. It’s about 1150 miles or 1800 KM. I can’t really remember what it was that made me think it was a good idea to do it – but it was “Something to do” once I moved to Vancouver.
Day 1 = WTF am I doing
I rose nice and early to catch my first ferry of the day from Horseshoe Bay, but the first task was to cross Vancouver City to get to the North Shore. Vancouver is the biggest city en route before San Francisco so although it’s pretty easy to navigate, it was a bit stressful.
